Interview: Smutty Rogue Talks Erotic Art & Chastity
Cam, known to most people online as Smutty Rogue, is a London-based freelance illustrator. His erotic artwork explores themes of gentle femdom, chastity, and power exchange. He likes to focus on intimacy, trust, and playful dynamics in his work, balancing sensuality with expressive storytelling. His unabashedly erotic, character-driven pieces have won him a worldwide following.
For this post, we interviewed Smutty Rogue about his artistic process and themes.
KINK3D: How did you get started making smutty art?
Smutty Rogue: I started drawing erotic art back in 2016. I'd found blog posts and art forums that focused on smut. I became particularly inspired by the works of artists such as InCase and Alexis Flower, whose comics were a joy to read because they incorporated storytelling along with smut. I decided that I wanted to learn to do just that, both to explore my own sexuality and to portray it in art! It was a chance to express my devious side whilst also drawing.
Did you have a formal arts background, or did you teach yourself how to draw?
I have zero formal arts training and have instead spent all my time learning to draw by myself. I have to thank YouTube for being a wonderful resource, as well as the many artists along my journey who were kind enough to answer my questions and give me feedback.
Do you have any rituals or routines that you like to do when you draw?
I tend to always go for a walk before I start to draw. It's a way for me to get into the mindset and transition from chill mode to work mode. Being a freelancer makes it hard to sometimes motivate myself, so having that moment to kickstart my day is great.
Your most popular theme has often been described as “gentle femdom”. Does that label resonate with you, or is there a different way you like to describe it?
I’ve definitely resonated with that label the most. The power dynamics of femdom can vary from strict to more playful and caring; gentle femdom in my mind represents a loving and sweet nature that complements the devoted power play that is often seen in femdom. That doesn’t mean you can’t still be punished for disobedience ;)
Aside from femdom, you’ve drawn a wide variety of subjects, such as submissive women, gender bending, and magical creatures. You also go back and forth between idealized body types and very realistic body types. Are there any subjects that are your personal favorites to draw? And have you noticed any particular subjects that tend to get the biggest reaction from your fans?
When I started to draw, I noticed that there was a real lack of realistic body types within the media. Especially in porn. And I felt like I wanted to represent that in my media to make it authentic and relatable. It's been one of my greatest joys to develop the artistic skills to capture a wide range of body types. I also think it's an aspect of my art that has resonated the most with my audience.
When you create long-term characters, are they inspired by people from your real life?
There’s a bit of yes and a bit of no to this answer. My characters are their own unique design whilst also having influences from myself or from experiences in my own life. I think there’s a subconscious symbiosis between real life experiences and my art.
Have you found that what turns you on personally has evolved over time?
Definitely! In fact I think I discovered my bisexuality through art. My sexual desires, fantasies, and turn-ons have all evolved thanks to my artistic journey. I had no idea about chastity until I discovered it online, and it quickly became a joy to draw.
Do you interact with your audience online? Have you made any connections through your art that turned into deeper friendships or relationships?
I’ve made some amazing friends online. My job has opened up so many opportunities to interact with my audience, and there have been so many genuine individuals that I have had the chance to meet both online and in person as a result. Being a freelance artist can be quite lonely. You spend a majority of the time on your own, and it's an independent craft. I quickly realised how important it was not only to interact with my audience but also to make friends and connections. It’s something I continue to pursue. I enjoy every opportunity to talk art and kink with people.
You’ve featured characters locked in chastity cages in many of your drawings. What is it about chastity that captures your erotic imagination?
I think chastity is a wonderful extension of femdom. The idea of tease and denial was an immediate love in both real life and in art. I think chastity can elevate the desperate nature that comes with wanting more, of wanting release and freedom, as well as to be controlled or restricted. It’s also a great visual representation of that, and I think it works really well in art!
Do you have any specific memories of when you first learned about chastity cages or chastity as a kink?
I learnt about it early on when I was introduced to femdom. It was used a lot in porn, and I remember being curious as to what this “device” was. I then discovered a few companies that were producing metal cages, but everything was so expensive and niche! I was always so curious and decided to do more research. I think chastity has only blossomed in recent years with companies such as KINK3D making these beautiful cages. I think the design of the cage is so important, and I just fell in love with them when I first discovered them on social media.
Is there anything about being a smutty artist that’s been a big surprise to you?
I honestly think the main surprise was that people use my art as a tool whilst they masturbate! It sounds foolish as I type, but it’s always been a surprise, even now!
Are there any kinky themes you’ve always secretly wanted to draw but haven’t done yet?
I’ve had the opportunity to draw most of the themes I want, but I enjoy the evolution that comes with my kinks and look forward to injecting any new ones into future art. I don’t think there’s a particular theme that currently hasn’t been drawn, but I do think some themes are better portrayed in comics than in single images, and maybe I will get to do that one day!
You have a Patreon, and you take commissions. Aside from that, are there any other commercial sides to your drawing?
An extension of Patreon is the introduction of comics. I’m currently looking for ways to draw more comics and eventually have them published, so people can buy them in print. I also have a particular desire to sell my art in person, whether it’s at a store, a kink fair, or a convention, as that would be a lovely way to connect with like-minded individuals.
